Weekly Photo Challenge: Growth

We just happened to have taken Mr. C’s annual height measurement this week. We had him stand next to this bathroom door and marked off his height with a pencil mark. So this photo is not one of my better entries, just a photo of a door, but it fits the theme this week!

I can’t believe that we’ve already done this for the third time. Seems like we just did it, but it’s been a year since the last time. The most recent measurement should be easy to see in the photo, its a pencil line above the door latch, 40 inches. Last year’s mark is a few inches below that, just about 35 inches, located just about at the top of the door latch. Might be hard to see the mark in the photo, but its there close to the top screw of the latch. Even lower is the first mark at about 28 inches.

It’s becoming a family tradition. This door was also used to measure the growth of both my wife and sister in law.

There’s always something to worry about as a parent. Will he be tall ? Will he be short? Will he be too tall ? Will he be too short ?

How tall he gets isn’t really one of my top things to worry about. My wife checks an online growth chart sometimes, and according to this chart, he should be about 5 feet 11 inches when he’s an adult. Which is taller than me. But to me this is like finding out that my great great grandfather was 5 feet 11 inches. So far removed from the present that it’s just trivia.

While it is always amazing watching him grow, what I worry about more often is if he will be happy at whatever height he is.

    • My wife is researching her ancestry, there’s some fascinating stories. It’s something else that surprises me about blogging, how other people are interested in seemingly mundane details of what I do. But then again I find myself getting very involved in other people’s blogs myself.

  1. My grandparents have a similar area in there house, grandpa, mom, uncle, me, brother and now my kids have all got measurements on it. I remember as a kid seeing how I compared to everyone else when they were my age.

    • It must be nice to still have that family history! People move so often that they have to sometimes leave that kind of thing behind.

  2. Happy indeed! My boys are all on the small side. Sigh…One not happy about it. Oh well, he has a big heart and that’s all that counts. Great post!

    • Thanks very much! It’s fascinating seeing a personality ‘grow’ as well as the height. Time sure does fly, doesn’t it.

  3. My in-laws used a closet door for this, and noted their 4 boys’ heights at regular intervals, noting names & dates. Broke my heart when they sold the house and the new owner painted over the history!

    • That’s too bad! We’re not sure how long we’re going to be living where we are now, so we’re using the door at a family vacation home. I should update the post to also say that this is the same door that measures the growth of Mr. C’s mom and aunt.
